Two basic functions of subject headings are assumed:

A. Subject headings enable the catalog user to find in the catalog an item of which the subject’s known; and,

B. Subject headings enable the catalog user to find what the library has on a given subject.

These functions parallel those attributed to name headings in the catalog. Basically, they assist in the location of individual items in the collection as well as collocation of related items.
