Character position definition and scope:

A one-character alphabetic code that indicates the extent to which the 100-151 heading conforms to the descriptive cataloging and/or subject heading system/thesaurus conventions used to formulate the heading.

Codes a, b, c and d are used only in established heading records.

Code n is used in all other kinds of records.

The codes defined for 008/33 apply only to the 1XX heading field.

The completeness of the authority information contained in the record is indicated in Leader/17 (Encoding level).

The fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this 008 position.
