Character position definition and scope:
These four character positions are undefined; each may contain a blank ( # ) meaning Undefined or a fill character ( | ) meaning No attempt to code.
National Level Requirement for character positions 008/34-37 is Optional.

Language
of heading code [obsolete, 1986]: Prior to 1986, character
positions 35-37 were defined as Language
of heading code. In 1986, the definition for these character
positions was made obsolete. Records created prior to 1986 may contain
a MARC language code or a # (blank) or a |
(fill character)
in each of these three character positions.
