Character position definition and scope:

A one-character alphabetic code indicates the type of emulsion on the film.  The word emulsion is used to describe the light-sensitive materials within a microform.  Proper storage and use of microforms requires identification of the emulsion they contain.  A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this position.
