Content designator history:

First Indicator - Government jurisdiction  (BK MP MU VM)  [obsolete]

Values  0 - United States  [obsolete]

1 - Canada  [obsolete]  [CAN/MARC only]

2 - France  [obsolete]  [CAN/MARC only]

Prior to 1979, field 017 was limited to U.S. copyright registration numbers.  In 1979, the first indicator was defined with values 0 (United States), 1 (Canada), and 2-9 (Reserved) to include numbers from other government jurisdictions.  This first indicator definition was made obsolete when subfield $b was defined in 1980 for USMARC and in 1984 for CAN/MARC.

Second Indicator - Display constant controller  [redefined, 2004]

Values  # - Copyright or legal deposit number

8 - No display constant generated

Prior to 2004, this indicator was undefined.

Subfield $a - Copyright or legal deposit number  [renamed, 2004]:  Subfield $a was renamed; formerly Copyright registration number.

Subfield $b - Source (assigning agency)  [redefined, 2001]:  Subfield $b was redefined as Assigning agency to differentiate it from subfield $2 (Source).

Subfield $d - Date  [new, 2004]:  Subfield $d was defined to record the date on which the copyright registration number was defined.

Subfield $i - Display text  [new, 2004]:  Subfield $i was defined to contain text to be displayed when the display constant associated with second indicator value # is inadequate.

Subfield $z - Canceled or invalid copyright or legal deposit number  [new, 2008]

Subfield $2 - Source  [new, 2001]:  Subfield $2 was defined to identify the source of the copyright registration (or legal deposit) number.
