Field definition and scope:

Field 084 contains a classification number assigned by a cataloging agency using a scheme other than the Library of Congress Classification, the classification systems of the Library and Archives Canada, the National Library of Medicine, the National Agricultural Library, the U.S. Government Printing Office, Universal Decimal Classification, or Dewey Decimal Classification schemes.

These latter numbers are recorded in fields 050 (Library of Congress Call Number), 055 (Classification Numbers Assigned in Canada), 060 (National Library of Medicine Call Number), 070 (National Agricultural Library Call Number), 086 (Government Document Classification Number), 080 (Universal Decimal Classification Number), and 082 (Dewey Decimal Classification Number), respectively.

Field 084 is also used for numbers assigned from the CODOC system used in Canada to classify government documents.  The field is not to be used for classification numbers assigned from a source for which a subfield $2 source of number code would not be assigned.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 084 is repeatable.
