Field definition and scope:

Field 550 contains a note referring to current and former issuing bodies, including notes containing editing, compiling, or translating information that involves an issuing body.  Notes denoting the item as an official organ of a society, etc., are included in this field.

Field 550 is generally used for issuing bodies traced in a 700-75X added entry field.  The field explains their relationship to the publication and justifies the 7XX added entries.

Notes relating to commercial publishers, distributors, or places of publication are recorded in field 500 (General Note).

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 550 is repeatable.

Content designator history:

First Indicator - Existence of additional information  (SE)  [obsolete]:  The first indicator was made obsolete in 1990.  It was used to indicate whether the issuing body note simply named the issuing body or whether the note also gave additional information.  The values were:  0 (Repetitious) and 1 (Not repetitious).

Subfield $z - Source of note information  (SE)  [obsolete]:  Subfield $z was made obsolete in 1990.  Source information is included as part of the issuing body note in subfield $a.
