Field definition and scope:

Field 565 contains information about the content and characteristics of case files.  Case files are interpreted broadly as records that contain standard categories of information about a defined population.  Files may be composed of individual documents, each of which contains information about a single unit of analysis or they may reflect aggregate data, as in the case of machine-readable records, that can be used and electronically subdivided into individual case documents.

For computer files, field 565 contains the number of cases or variables making up the file and, when taken in conjunction with the number of logical records recorded in field 256 (Computer File Characteristics), provides an indication of the extent of the file.

The note is sometimes displayed and/or printed with an introductory phrase that is generated as a display constant based on the first indicator value.

The National level record requirement for this field is Optional.

Field 565 is repeatable.
