Field definition and scope:

Field 700 contains an added entry in which the entry element is a personal name.  Added entries are assigned according to various cataloging rules to give access to the bibliographic record from personal name headings which may not be more appropriately assigned as 600 (Subject Added Entry - Personal Name) or 800 (Series Added Entry - Personal Name) fields.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 700 is repeatable.

Guidelines for applying content designators:

The content designators identify the subelements occurring in personal name fields constructed according to generally accepted cataloging and thesaurus-building rules [e.g., Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR 2), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)].

Personal names used in phrase subject headings (e.g., John, the Baptist, saint, in the Koran) are contained in field 650 (Subject Added Entry - Topical Term).

First indicator - Type of personal name entry element

Values  1 - Single surname  [redefined]

2 - Multiple surname  [obsolete]

In 1996, the first indicator value 2 (Multiple surname) was made obsolete.  Value 1 (Single surname) was redefined as Surname to be used for headings with either single or multiple surnames.

Second indicator - Type of added entry

Values  0 - Alternative entry  (BK AM CF MP MU SE)  [obsolete]

1 - Secondary entry  (BK AM CF MP MU SE)  [obsolete]

1 - Printed on card  (VM)  [obsolete]

3 - Not printed on card  (VM)  [obsolete]

In 1993, second indicator values 0 (Alternative entry) and 1 (Secondary entry) were made obsolete in the books, archival and manuscripts control, computer files, maps, music, and serials specifications.  Values 1 (Printed on card) and 3 (Not printed on card) were made obsolete in the visual materials specifications.

In 1979, subfield $n was defined for numbered parts/sections and subfield $p (Part) was redefined to include only named parts/sections.  Prior to that change, both the number and the name of a part were contained in one $p subfield.
