Character position definition and scope:

A one-character alphabetic code indicates the specific material designation of an electronic resource.  The specific material designation describes the special class of material (usually the class of physical object) to which an item belongs, for example, a magnetic disk.  A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this position.
