Character position definition and scope:

A one-character code that indicates whether the item being cataloged contains parts. This position is not used to indicate that parts may exist elsewhere.

A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this 008 position.

Content designator history:

In 1988, the character position definition 008/21 Existence of parts (MU) was made obsolete. The defined codes were: # (No parts exist), a (Parts exist), n (Not applicable), and u (Unknown).

Code # (No parts exist) was defined in 1980. Records created prior to that change may contain a blank that had no specific meaning.
