Character position definition and scope:

A one-character numeric code indicates whether or not the item or accompanying material includes a location index or gazetteer.  Information for this data element is derived from mention of an index or gazetteer in other parts of the bibliographic record (e.g., in the title or in a note).  A map index to adjoining sheets is not considered an index when coding this position.  This data element refers only to gazetteers, place name indexes, etc.  Graphic indexes such as index maps are not coded.  A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this 008 position.

Record requirements for National-level and Minimal-level records:  Optional.
