Field definition and scope:

-- USA only --

Field 262 is used in the United States to support retrospective conversion of Pre-AACR 2 cataloging records.  It was never defined in CAN/MARC.

This field contains imprint information for sound recordings.  It is used only for cataloging of sound recordings created prior to the AACR2 cataloging rules.  It may appear on records created before 1981 or on new retrospective records containing pre-1981 cataloging.  For cataloging created since 1980, field 260 (Publication, Distribution, Etc. (Imprint)) is used for the data contained in 262 subfields $a, $b, $c, and field 028 (Publisher or Distributor Number) is used for the data in field 262 subfields $k and $l.

The imprint usually consists of the trade name of the publisher, the serial identification (e.g., the record or album numbers), and the date of release.  Place and name of the publisher can be substituted for the trade name of the publisher when the latter is known not to be primarily a record publisher.  For archival purposes, the matrix and take number may also be recorded in this field.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 262 is NOT repeatable.

Prior to 1977, these data elements were identified by subfield codes $d, $c, and $e, respectively.

In 1980, the use of field 262 was restricted to pre-AACR 2 records for sound recordings.

Field 260 (Publication, Distribution, Etc. (Imprint)) was validated for use with all music materials including sound recordings for the data contained in field 262 subfields $a, $b, and $c.

Field 028 (Publisher or Distributor Number) was defined for the data in field 262 subfields $k and $l.
