Character position definition and scope:
A one-character alphabetic code indicates the specific material designation of a map. It describes the special class of cartographic material (usually the class of physical object) to which the resource belongs. A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this position.
Record requirements for National-level records: Mandatory; for Minimal-level records: Optional.
