Field definition and scope:

Field 051 contains information added to a bibliographic record by the Library of Congress that relates to additional copies, issues, and/or offprints, etc. of the described material that are in its collections.  Field 051 is used only for such information assigned by the Library of Congress.  The field does not include supplements, indexes, etc., which are related to, but not the same as, the item in the main record.  This field is frequently used for Library of Congress publications when the first two copies are given a call number based on the subject of the publication and additional copies are given a call number assigned to publications of LC.

The National level record requirement for this field is Mandatory if applicable.

Field 051 is repeatable.

Content designator history:

Second Indicator - Series call number  (SE)  [obsolete]:  In the serials specifications, the use of the second indicator position to indicate the type of series was made obsolete in 1976.  The values were:  0 (No series involved), 1 (Main series), 2 (Subseries), and 3 (Sub-subseries).
