Character position definition and scope:

A one-character alphabetic code that indicates the type of cartographic item being described. A fill character ( | ) is used when no attempt has been made to code this 008 position.

Record requirements for National-level and Minimal-level records: Mandatory.

Content designator history:

Prior to the definition of code e (Atlas) in 1995, atlases were treated as printed language material. The field 008 configuration for books was used.

008/24-25 Prime meridian [obsolete] [CAN/MARC only]: Prior to 1997, this position was used to indicate the prime meridian that was named on a map. The definitions were:
