Guidelines for applying content designators:
The content designators identify the subelements occurring in named event headings constructed according to generally accepted thesaurus-building conventions (e.g., Faceted Application of Subject Terminology (FAST)).
Named
events are those which cannot be regarded as responsible agents, e.g.,
battles, earthquakes, famines, financial crises, fires, hurricanes, riots,
strikes, volcanic eruptions, wars, etc.
Named
events which can be regarded as responsible agents such as meetings or
conferences as well as athletic contests, competitions, expeditions, expositions,
fairs, festivals, sports events, tournaments, etc., are recorded in X11 fields.
The indicators, subfield codes, and input conventions for the named event fields 147, 447, 547, and 747 follow similar patterns. Guidelines for applying them are below. Subfields are grouped by type of entry.
For indicator and subfield code definitions and examples, National level (NLR) record requirements, and designator repeatability, see table below. An asterisk ( * ) in the column indicates that the requirement varies. See table in the specific field.:
