This appendix described the interim method for creating CONSER records for non-print serials. This approach is in effect pending the full implementation of USMARC format integration.

Format integration is being implemented in two phases. The first phase, implemented in early 1995, defines all variable fields for all types of publications. The second phase, scheduled for early 1996, will redefine fixed-length fields 006, 007, and 008. Once phase 2 is implemented, non-textual serials will be coded according to their physical format (field 008) as well as their seriality (field 006). Special physical features will be coded in field 007, as applicable.

With the implementation of phase 1, serial catalogers may now use fields specifically defined for non-print formats that were previously available only when creating records in other formats (e.g., field 538 that was defined only in the computer files format). These fields have been added to the CEG and are listed in the tables that follow in this appendix. While all variable fields are defined for all formats, only fields that are considered applicable to serials have been included in the CEG and in Appendix N.

Until phase 2 is implemented, CONSER catalogers must still input records in the serials format on OCLC, which limits the coding of the leader and fixed-fields. Specifically, these include:

1) Leader 06/Type of Record:

Code as "a" as this is the only code defined for serials.

2) 008 Fixed-length data elements:

The serial-defined 008 elements are coded. Bytes 22 and 23 (Form of Item and Form of Original Item) are coded as blank ( # ) as they do not relate to non-print serials.

3) 007 Physical Description Fixed Field:

Currently, field 007 can only be used for microforms and is not used for non-print serials.

Computer Files:

Computer file serials are cataloged according to AACR2 chapters 1, 9, and 12.
