NOTE:  See MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (547 Former Title Complexity Note) for code definitions not given below.

Description/Instructions

Field 547 is used for a note that expresses a complex relationship between varying titles whenever an intelligible note cannot be system generated from the data in field 247 (Former Title).  When a note is to be generated using field 547, the former title(s) is also given in field 247.  Field 547 is used according to the conventions of "latest entry cataloging," by which one cataloging record represents all issues of a serial which has changed title.  Under earlier rules (e.g., ALA) it was the practice to catalog a serial under the latest title, with former titles noted on the same record in a "title varies" note.  It is also used under the current AACR2 provisions of "integrating entry" for notes regarding former titles of integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles on the same record.

Field 547 is used only in the following records:  1) records for reproduction microforms that have been "cloned" from a latest entry record for the original serial;  2) records created from preexisting cataloging when performing retrospective conversion; and  3) records created under current AACR2 rules for integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles.

When field 547 is used for former titles cataloged under earlier latest entry rules, fixed field 008/34 Entry convention is set to value "1" and Leader/18 Descriptive cataloging form is set to blank (#).  When field 247 is used for current AACR2 cataloging conventions for integrating resources and electronic serials that do not retain their earlier titles, the entry convention byte is set to value "2" and the descriptive cataloging form is set to "a".

INTEGRATING RESOURCES:  Per 12.7B4.2, a 547 is only used if the title change situation requires more explanation than can be given in the 247 field(s).  Do not give a 547 field just because there are multiple 247 fields.

An example of using the 547 field for an electronic journal which has not retained its earlier title:
